Date Added November 25, 2009 | Print | Show/Hide images

Error 718 is typically either an issue with the Extra Initialization String (Misspelling or incorrect symbols) or a Network Outage. If the phone is a 2G data device also make sure you are not talking on the phone while attempting to connect.

Basic Troubleshooting - Always complete these steps prior to Advanced Troubleshooting

  1. Pull the battery out of the phone while it is disconnected from the computer and charger
  2. Restart the computer
  3. Verify the Phone is capable of browsing the internet on the phone
Note If the phone is unable to browse itself, contact your wireless provider.
  4. Verify the connection and settings are correct by following the Connection Setup again to check the settings
  5. Test the connection again

Advanced Troubleshooting

Verify the Extra Initialization String:

  • Follow the Phone as Modem setup for your specific phone and verify the Extra Initialization String is #ModemInitialization
  • If you are using the Manufacturer Software for the phone to connect with, verify the APN(Access Point Name) is correct.

Modify Dial-up Connection Settings:

  1. On the computer go to
    • Windows XP - Start > Control Panel > Network Connections
    • Windows Vista - Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections
    • Windows 7 - Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings
  2. Right click the Dial-up Connection then select Properties
  3. Windows Vista/7 - Click the Options tab then click PPP Settings button
  4. Windows XP - Click the Networking tab then click the Settings button
  5. Uncheck Use LCP Extensions
  6. Uncheck Enable Software Compression
  7. Click OK
  8. Click OK again
  9. Attempt to connect to test

Reinstall the Modem:

  1. Go to Start Control PanelPhone and Modem Options
  2. Click the Modems tab (If a window pops up asking for information, type the Area code then click OK first)
  3. Select your Modem (LG USB Modem, Standard Modem (Blackberry), Samsung USB Modem, etc)
  4. Click Remove
  5. Unplug your phone then plug the phone back in and allow it to reinstall
  6. Follow the directions to setup your phone as a modem again.

Disable Firewalls:

  • Firewall can block Modem connections. Even if the connection has worked previously, any updates or changes to the Firewall software could change its behavior with the connection.
  • Sometimes, simply disabling the firewall will not be sufficient to ensure it is not causing the problem. Applications such as Norton Internet Security can still block connections when disabled, and even after uninstalling it. Follow all other steps prior to attempting to uninstall Firewall or Anti-virus applications.
  • To completely remove Norton search for and download the Norton Removal Utility online and use that to completely remove Norton.

Master Reset the device:

  • Perform a Backup of the data on the phone.
  • Visit the Tmoatt homepage and click the Manufacturer and Phone for specific directions on performing a Master Reset on the phone if available or find the directions in the User Manual.

Test on a different computer:

  • Test the phone on a different computer to verify whether the phone is defective or the computer.
  • If the phone works on a different computer, your computer may need to be serviced by a computer specialist.
  • If the phone does not work on a different computer, the USB cord may be defective or the USB port on the device.
