!! If you have Blackberry Desktop Manager 5.01, follow these steps instead.

First Steps

  1. Install the Blackberry Desktop Manager from the included CD or download it from https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/
  2. When asked whether to install for Blackberry Enterprise, Blackberry Internet Service or Desktop Redirector, select Blackberry Internet Service unless you know you need one of the other services. This can always be changed later.
  3. Once installed, plug the blackberry into the PC using the USB Cable.
  4. The Desktop Manager should detect the Blackberry and show the PIN number at the bottom of the window.
  5. For older Desktop Manager versions(4.3 and earlier), go to Options Connection Settings, then click Detect
Note If there are issues connecting the Blackberry to the Blackberry Desktop Manager, contact your wireless provider for assistance.
  6. The Blackberry Desktop Manager has to be open for the computer to communicate with the Blackberry. Minimize the window but do not close it.

Setup the Modem Properties and Dial up Connection

  1. On the computer go to Start and select Control Panel
  2. On Windows Vista, click the Classic View link on the left Panel.
  3. For Windows 7 click the All Control Panel Items icon
  4. Open the Device Manager icon
  5. Click the plus next to Modems
  6. Right-click Standard Modem and select Properties
  7. Click the Advanced tab at the top of the Standard Modem Properties
  8. In the Extra Initialization Command box type #ModemInitialization
  9. Click OK to save the changes
  10. Close the Device Manager
  11. Open the Network and Sharing Center icon from the Control Panel
  12. On the left panel, click the Set up a Connection or Network link
  13. Select Setup a Dial up Connection and click Next
  14. Select Standard Modem then click Next
  15. In the Phone Number field, enter #ModemNumber
  16. For the Username enter #ModemUsername
  17. For the Password enter #ModemPassword
  18. Set the Connection Name to #ModemName
  19. If the Blackberry is connected and the Desktop Manager is open, click Connect
  20. Windows will attempt to connect and test the connection

If the Connection fails

  1. If the connection fails, select the option to Setup Connection Anyways after it attempts to connect
  2. Windows will display a message that The Connection is setup and ready to use. Click Close
  3. On Vista click Manage Network Connections in the left panel
  4. For Windows 7 click Change Adapter Settings in the left panel
  5. Open the connection just created and click Dial to connect
  6. Windows will provide an Error Message with a error code (ie: 734, 718, etc)
  7. See the Phone as Modem category for directions on fixing specific error codes
