Error 718 when connecting using a Phone as a Modem


Error 718 is typically either an issue with the Extra Initialization String (Misspelling or incorrect symbols) or a Network Outage. If the phone is a 2G data device also make sure you are not talking on the phone while attempting to connect.

 

Basic Troubleshooting - Always complete these steps prior to Advanced Troubleshooting

  1. Pull the battery out of the phone while it is disconnected from the computer and charger
  2. Restart the computer
  3. Verify the Phone is capable of browsing the internet on the phone
    Note If the phone is unable to browse itself, contact your wireless provider.
  4. Verify the connection and settings are correct by following the Connection Setup again to check the settings
  5. Test the connection again

 

Advanced Troubleshooting

Verify the Extra Initialization String:

Modify Dial-up Connection Settings:

  1. On the computer go to
  2. Right click the Dial-up Connection then select Properties
  3. Windows Vista/7 - Click the Options tab then click PPP Settings button
  4. Windows XP - Click the Networking tab then click the Settings button
  5. Uncheck Use LCP Extensions
  6. Uncheck Enable Software Compression
  7. Click OK
  8. Click OK again
  9. Attempt to connect to test

Reinstall the Modem:

  1. Go to Start Control PanelPhone and Modem Options
  2. Click the Modems tab (If a window pops up asking for information, type the Area code then click OK first)
  3. Select your Modem (LG USB Modem, Standard Modem (Blackberry), Samsung USB Modem, etc)
  4. Click Remove
  5. Unplug your phone then plug the phone back in and allow it to reinstall
  6. Follow the directions to setup your phone as a modem again.
